The Al-Furat Center for Development and Strategic Studies, one of the centers affiliated with the blessed Marja‘iyya in Holy Karbala, hosted its monthly session featuring a research presentation by Dr. Hussein al-Sarhan, a researcher at the center. His study was entitled: “The Future of the Nation-State in the Middle East Amid Militarization and Regional Conflicts.”
In his remarks, Dr. al-Sarhan reviewed the historical trajectory of state formation, explaining that the concept of the nation-state has undergone significant transformations. He highlighted the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648 as a turning point in the political history of Europe and the world, which consolidated the idea of the state as a political and legal entity and paved the way for new dynamics in relations between states and empires.
The session also explored theories related to the concept of the state and the role of the West in laying the foundations of the earliest forms of modern political organization.
